For Truckee, California resident Doug Stoup, the Beijing Summer Olympic Games are not a forum to display his remarkable athletic talents as much as bring awareness to his adventures and educational programs.
The notable polar explorer leaves for China Aug. 11 as a guest of the Olympic Organizing Committee.
In March of 2008, Stoup, whose recent journeys included a trip in January
2008 to the geographic South Pole, traveled to Greece to help start the Olympic Torch Relay and also plant trees in honor of the forests burned in last year's tragic fires in Olympia, Greece. In April of 2008 he ran as a participant in the London, England Olympic Torch Relay. Subsequently, the following month he skied with the Olympic Torch to the geographic North Pole.
Sponsored by the Coca Cola Company, while in Beijing Stoup premiers a short film on his educational programs that are directed to youth to follow their dreams and embrace life's challenges.
Stoup has also been selected by the Olympic Organizing Committee to be a keynote speaker with athletes of the United States Olympic Team. Other speakers include former vice-president Al Gore and Thomas Friedman, author of the NY Times Bestseller "The World Is Flat."
"Išll be talking to the athletes about how they are role models that they need to show the world how to live a sustainable way of life," says Doug, 41, whose talk is scheduled for Aug. 15. "This is a great honor and a way for me to represent my country and the Tahoe area."
In October of 2008, Stoup returns to the Antarctica peninsula for Ski Cruise 2008, an expedition that offers active travelers a thirteen-day adventure diverse in both athletic challenge and cultural experience.
